Whatever Fiona might be thinking, her cool expression plainly showed that she wasn’t happy. Joanna suddenly felt as cold as death. She wanted to see the fire in those soft gray eyes and that sexy smile.

Fiona swallowed and glanced away. “I’ve got things to do,” she added.

Her throat tightening, Joanna went to her, took Fiona in her arms and kissed her. Fiona, as before, melted into her, passionately returning the kiss. Instantly, Joanna’s body glowed. Then Fiona tensed. Drawing back, she took a deep breath. She ran her hand distractedly through her hair, avoiding Joanna’s eyes. “Must go …” she murmured, heading for the stairs.

“I’ll show you to the door.”

“No. I’m fine. Good-bye.” Fiona quickly disappeared down the stairs.

“I’ll phone you,” Joanna called after her, but there was no reply. Her heart pounding, she stood listening to the cutting echo of spiked heels on marble. The front door closed with a dull thud. In the silence that followed, Joanna shivered. It had to be this way, she told herself. No matter what they allowed to develop between them, no matter how long it took, inevitably the day would come when Fiona would walk out that door for the last time. Joanna was determined that she wouldn’t be overly bothered when that day came.

She turned on the radio. Fiona probably hadn’t been upset, she thought hopefully. Like herself, Fiona was probably only showing some restraint. Joanna poured her coffee and stirred in some sugar. She would call Fiona in a few days. They could have dinner, maybe meet some friends for a drink or something. They would have some fun and any awkwardness they felt this morning would be behind them. Joanna gulped down her coffee. Then they’d spend the night together. Everything would be fine.

Her mobile was lying on the counter. She switched it on in readiness for the usual Saturday morning barrage of calls, then turned her attention to the day’s work ahead.
